Brazil has nine national public holidays set by federal law in 2027, plus Good Friday, which falls on 26 March 2027. Of these ten, only 7 fall on a weekday: Labour Day, Black Consciousness Day and Christmas are on Saturdays. On the other hand, Independence Day, Our Lady of Aparecida and All Souls' Day all fall on a Tuesday, and each leaves a one-day bridge on the Monday before; Proclamation of the Republic Day is a Monday, a ready-made long weekend. Carnival is not a national holiday: Carnival Tuesday 2027 is 9 February 2027, an optional day off for the federal civil service and an ordinary working day in the private sector unless a local law says otherwise. Corpus Christi, on 27 May 2027, follows the same rule. Each state adds its own data magna and sometimes more: there are 36 state holidays across the 27 federative units, from a single one in several states to 6 in Acre. With ten days off placed well, someone working in São Paulo gets 27 consecutive free days over 2027.

Holidays in 2027: a year of Tuesdays

The 2027 calendar has an unusual feature: three national holidays in a row fall on a Tuesday. Independence Day is Tuesday, 7 September 2027, Our Lady of Aparecida is Tuesday, 12 October 2027 and All Souls' Day is Tuesday, 2 November 2027. Each time, the Monday before becomes a bridge: one day off for four free days. If you have three days off to spend in the second half of the year, those three bridges are the best deal of 2027. Right after, Proclamation of the Republic Day falls on Monday, 15 November 2027, a long weekend at no cost.

The first half of the year is leaner. New Year's Day is a Friday, Good Friday falls on 26 March 2027, and Tiradentes Day, on Wednesday, 21 April 2027, sits midweek: it takes two days off, Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday, to turn it into four free days. Labour Day is a Saturday and gives nothing. At the end of the year, Black Consciousness Day and Christmas also fall on Saturdays.

Each state's numbers differ because of state holidays. In São Paulo, the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932 holiday falls on a Friday in 2027 and makes one more long weekend; in Bahia, Independence of Bahia Day on 2 July is a Friday too. The table below gives, for each federative unit, how many national and state holidays there are in 2027, how many fall on a weekday, and how many working days are left.

Public holidays in Brazil: how they work and how to use them

National holidays and the laws behind them

Brazil's national civil holidays sit in a handful of laws. Law 662 of 1949, as amended by Law 10,607 of 2002, makes 1 January, 21 April, 1 May, 7 September, 2 November, 15 November and 25 December national holidays. Law 6,802 of 1980 adds 12 October, the day of Our Lady of Aparecida, patron saint of Brazil. Law 14,759 of 2023 made 20 November, National Day of Zumbi and Black Consciousness, a national holiday; it has applied nationwide since 2024.

Good Friday rests on a different footing. Law 9,093 of 1995 says religious holidays are declared by municipal law, up to four per municipality, "Good Friday included". In practice the day is kept across the country and the Ministry of Management's yearly ordinance lists it among the national holidays, so it appears here as a holiday in every state. The same law lets each state set its data magna, the source of most state holidays.

State holidays: the data magna and more

Each state may declare its data magna by law, usually a founding, emancipation or independence date. That is how São Paulo has 9 July, Bahia 2 July and Rio Grande do Sul 20 September. Several states went further and created other holidays, religious or civic. The Federal Supreme Court has struck some of them down, holding that only the Union legislates on holidays beyond the data magna: Rondônia's Evangelical Day fell with ADI 3940 and Amapá's Saint James's Day with ADI 4820. Others remain in force and are applied by state governments and courts.

That is why every state holiday on this site comes with the law, decree or official calendar where we read it, with a link. When a date appears in lists online but we found no official text, it is left out of the count and the state's page explains why. All 2027 state holidays are gathered in a single table.

Municipal holidays in the state capitals

Municipalities may have up to four religious holidays, Good Friday included, plus the centenary of their founding. State capitals usually spend that allowance on their patron saint, Corpus Christi and dates of their own. We publish municipal holidays only for capitals whose law we read from an official source: Rio Branco, Maceió, Manaus, Fortaleza, Cuiabá, Campo Grande, Belo Horizonte, João Pessoa, Curitiba, Recife, Teresina, Natal, Porto Alegre, Porto Velho, Boa Vista, São Paulo, Aracaju, Palmas. For the others, the tool shows national and state holidays only and says the municipal law was not checked. For any other city, the reference is the municipal law or the city hall's calendar decree.

Optional days off: what they are and who they apply to

A ponto facultativo is not a public holiday. It is a day the government gives its own staff off, and the Ministry of Management's yearly ordinance sets them for federal bodies. For 2026, Ordinance MGI 11,460 of 2025 listed Carnival Monday and Tuesday, the morning of Ash Wednesday, 20 April, Corpus Christi and the day after, Public Servant's Day and the afternoons of 24 and 31 December. States and city halls publish their own lists. Private employers are bound by none of them.

The 2027 ordinance had not been published as of 28 October 2026. Until it is, the optional days off page shows the 2026 dates and the computed 2027 movable dates, without guessing what the ordinance will decide.

How the tool calculates

Fixed dates come from the law. Movable dates come from Easter, computed with Gauss's formula and checked against a second algorithm, by Meeus, Jones and Butcher, for every year from 1600 to 2600. Carnival Tuesday falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, Ash Wednesday 46 days before, Good Friday 2 days before and Corpus Christi 60 days after. Details are in the method.

Today's date is your device's: the next holiday and the day count are computed in your browser, at midnight in your time zone. That matters in a country with four time zones: when it is midnight in Brasília, it is still 10 pm in Rio Branco.

Holidays in 2026 and 2028

Few holidays are left in 2026: All Souls' Day on a Monday, Proclamation of the Republic Day on a Sunday, Black Consciousness Day and Christmas on Fridays. That is three long weekends in under two months. The full list is on public holidays 2026, and December's on undefined.

2028 looks better. Tiradentes Day and Good Friday fall on Fridays, and Labour Day, Black Consciousness Day and Christmas on Mondays. On the other hand, Independence Day, Aparecida and All Souls' Day fall on Thursdays, each with a bridge on the Friday. With ten days off, someone in São Paulo reaches 29 consecutive free days. Just pick 2028 in the long-weekend planner.

Common questions

What is the next national holiday in Brazil?

It depends on when you read this: the tool at the top works from your device's date. For the rest of 2026, the national holidays left are All Souls' Day on Monday 2 November, Proclamation of the Republic Day on a Sunday, Black Consciousness Day on Friday 20 November, and Christmas Day on a Friday. The first one in 2027 is New Year's Day, a Friday.

What is a "feriado prolongado" and what is an "emenda"?

A feriado prolongado is a weekend stretched by a holiday on a Monday or a Friday: three days in a row without work. An emenda (bridge) is the working day between the holiday and the weekend when the holiday falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday: take it off, or get it off from your employer, and you have four days in a row. The bridge day is not a holiday; it depends on your employer or, in the civil service, on a decree.

Is Carnival a national holiday in Brazil?

No. No federal law makes Carnival a public holiday. For federal bodies, Carnival Monday and Tuesday are optional days off set each year by an ordinance of the Ministry of Management. In the private sector they are working days unless a state or municipal law makes Carnival a holiday locally, or a collective agreement or contract gives the time off. In 2027, Carnival Tuesday is 9 February 2027.

If a Brazilian holiday falls on a weekend, is it moved to Monday?

Not under federal law. Law 662/1949 and the other holiday laws provide no substitute day: the holiday is kept on its date, even on a weekend. There are local exceptions. In Acre, a 2009 state law moves state holidays falling Tuesday to Thursday to the Friday, except the state anniversary; the tool already applies that rule.

Does a municipal holiday follow where you live or where you work?

A municipal law applies within the municipality. So whether you get the day off depends on where your workplace is, not where you live: someone living in Niterói and working in Rio de Janeiro follows Rio's holidays. National holidays apply across the country and state holidays across the whole state, whatever the city.

Is anything I enter stored or sent?

No. Your state, year and days off are processed only in your browser. There is no account and no form. When you change an option, the page writes your choice into the address bar so you can share the link; that too stays on your device.
