Brazilian Mother's Day 2027 is 9 May 2027, the second Sunday of May. The date comes from Decree 21,366 of 5 May 1932, signed by Getúlio Vargas: "the second Sunday of May is dedicated to mothers". The decree does not create a holiday: since it always falls on a Sunday, it does not change working hours for people who work Monday to Friday. For retailers it is one of the busiest dates of the year, and shopping-centre shops usually open that Sunday. In 2026 Mother's Day was on 10 May 2026 and in 2028 it will be on 14 May 2028. The second Sunday of May always falls between the 8th and the 14th. In Portugal the date differs, the first Sunday of May; in many English-speaking countries it is the second Sunday of May, as in Brazil.

Where the date comes from in Brazil
Getúlio Vargas made the date official in 1932 with Decree 21,366 of 5 May 1932: the second Sunday of May is dedicated to mothers (Chamber of Deputies). Article 1 dedicates the second Sunday of May to mothers, "in celebration of the feelings and virtues that a mother's love helps to awaken". It is an observance, not a holiday: the decree says nothing about time off or stopping work.
Work and shops on Mother's Day
Since it falls on a Sunday, Sunday rules apply: anyone working that day, as in shopping-centre retail, is entitled to weekly rest on another day, under their rota and collective agreement. There is no double pay for Mother's Day, because it is not a holiday.
