Sergipe has one state holiday, 8 July, the state's political emancipation, split from Bahia in 1820. It is in the state constitution itself. 24 October, once a holiday, stopped being one in 2000. 2027: 11 national and state holidays, 8 on weekdays, and 253 working days. Article 269 of the Sergipe Constitution sets 8 July as a holiday; Constitutional Amendment 20 of 2000 removed 24 October, which marked independence on another date and remains a popular celebration. Aracaju has, under municipal Law 1,358/1988, the city anniversary on 17 March, marking the move of the capital from São Cristóvão to Aracaju in 1855, Corpus Christi, Saint John's Day on 24 June and Our Lady of the Conception on 8 December. The law calls these holidays "fixed and non-transferable".
